SQlab Saddles

Saddle soreness and genital pain/numbness as a result of poorly fitting (or fitted) saddles is an all too common complaint amongst clients presenting for a bike fit. Issues that arise purely due to sub-optimal bike setup can be addressed simply with positional changes, however, a saddle that is fundamentally the wrong profile/density/width for your individual anatomy and intended use can never be made to work well.

Cycle Dynamics has access to a variety of test saddles from different manufacturers, however, a chance encounter in 2014 brought SQlab saddles to Cycle Dynamics’ attention. After a period of testing being subsequently convinced of their efficacy in significantly offloading the sensitive soft-tissues and neurovascular structures (as illustrated in the pictures to the right), Cycle Dynamics began recommending this brand. No local dealers were to be found, however, so the decision was made to become a dealer so that customers can physically test out the saddles in the context of a bike fit.

So why was the decision made to take on a brand that is little known in the Australian market? Quite simply because Cycle Dynamics has found the unique profile to be more effective at offloading pressure where pressure should not be than almost any other saddle design fitted over the past 10yrs. This is no surprise as the team responsible for research and development is lead by a German urologist by the name of Dr. Stefan Staudte. As such, SQlab saddles are an excellent option for those suffering from intractable saddle issues such as major saddle sores, severe chafing, skin breakdown, pudendal neuropathy, erectile dysfunction etc…..

A range of different models exist to cover the full spectrum of cycling disciplines, including road, triathlon, MTB, cyclocross, touring and city riding and within most models a range of widths is also available to help tailor the fit to the individual. Not all models are currently stocked by Cycle Dynamics but those that aren’t can generally be arranged by special order. Should you choose to buy a saddle as part of a fit you will receive 20% off the recommended retail price and have 4 weeks to test the saddle out in real-world conditions. Some tweaking of the saddle position or tilt is to be expected during this time but if at the end of 4 weeks you are not achieving the desired level of comfort you can return the saddle for a refund.

***IMPORTANT – PLEASE READ***

Note that a restocking fee not exceeding 20% of the full recommended retail price (not based on any discounted price at the time of sale) may be charged if the saddle is returned without being properly cleaned or obviously marked, therefore needing to be subsequently resold at a discounted price as ex-demo stock. In order to accept a return for a full refund the saddle must be clean and undamaged with no significant marking. Damaged or excessively worn/marked saddles will not be accepted.

Please note that Cycle Dynamics is not a retail bike shop so in most circumstances an appointment will need to be made to assess you on and off the bike in order to provided specific recommendations. This is of particular importance for those suffering any of the above mentioned saddle-related issues, as well as any pain in the low back, pelvis and lower limb in general. The reason for this is that saddle selection is strongly interdependent upon other aspects of your bike fit, not to mention your individual physique, fitness levels, flexibility, riding experience and past/present injury problems.

612 Race Carbon

The 612 road is the first saddle in the SQlab range specifically designed for the road bike. It combines a weight-optimised saddle shell and SQlab’s renowned step design with a slightly kicked up rear. The saddle hence provides a degree of counter-support for your pelvis. The saddle nose has a very slim shape which reduces chafing while still providing a flat surface profile due to SQlab’s Maxcontact® concept. This provides maximum surface area to provide reduced pressure despite keeping a slim profile. The use of lightweight carbon rails drops the weight of the saddle to an unbeatable 184 – 206g (saddle size dependent).

Available in 12cm, 13cm, 14cm and 15cm widths.

611 Active Race Road/MTB

Road and MTB saddle with increased relief to the perineal area. The tried and proven pressure distribution of the lower nose in combination with SQlab’s Maxcontact® shape highly reduced the pressure to the perineum and provides perfect ergonomics for an athletic application and competitive use. Suitable for men and women alike in a moderate to athletic position.

This model utilises the SQlab active concept which allows a degree of controlled lateral tilt using elastomeric inserts to dampen the movement (soft, medium and firm options). 600 Active (Medical)

The SQlab 600 Active, designed for riders who are intolerant of any pressure whatsoever to the perineal area (eg. severe pudendal neuropathy, erectile dysfunction, prostatitis etc….). Its two separate pads for support under the “sit bones” is similar to other forms of saddles used for this purpose, however, what makes the saddle unique is the presence of a nose which helps contribute to the control of the bicycle via contact with the inner thighs.

Note that this saddle necessitates a very upright position (ie. not suitable for drop bar road and mountain bikes) and rider weight is limited to 120kg. For larger riders the 24cm SQlab 621 Active is recommended instead.
